She's had a survey, a keel bolt dropped (pristine and singing like new after 20 years) topsides primed, filled and painted, coachroof glassed, antifouled, new shaft bearing, mast revarnished. And a lot more besides. Not a sign of a seam, thanks to Mr Elkins and his men in 1937, headed by the legendary Reg Yebbseley (who died just a few months after I bought her way back in the lat 1990s.)

The weather helped, with a smattering a good day, punctuated by the usual West Coast stuff. Enough good days to allow everything to be done, with a few days to spare. Oh, and the rudder was rebuilt, tiller repaired and stuffing box refurbished.

I also raked the mast forward a touch, not to improve balance, but simply for aesthetics. She's always had a boldly raked mast, which I have often thought was a bit too bold.

After a month out of the water she leaked not a drop, the little 1GM 10 started third push and full marks Messrs Johnson and Loftus for a totally trouble free experience. If the yard was on Trip Advisor I'd give them 11/10.
or the dust (wear a mask and goggles or scrape upwind) but the danger
you might pose to other people if you are of a malicious temperament.

After buying a scraper tool from a well know retailer on line, I had an
email from the sales team asking for my passport.

I will say that again, ... asking to see my passport.

It appears that anyone buying a paint scraper must prove they are over
16, and thus not prone to go on a raging, hormone-fuelled teenage
rampage, armed with a... scraper.

I could not believe it. Ah, but it was true. No passport; no
scraper. No amount of pleading. Did I sound like a 16-year old hoodlum?
Clearly yes (which was a bit of a boost to my 60+-year-old ego).

In the end I sent them a photo of my passport, and received my scraper.

OK, it's the law, not the company. However, to date I have not heard of
anyone being threatened, or injured maliciously by a paint scraper
(which could, I admit, validate the passport requirement).

The blades,
by the way, would not have cut a hard cheese and, if anyone is planning
to use them to scrape a boat, save your money. I believe, in fact, the
blades themselves were made of cheese, Chinese cheddar.

I imagine it would have been the same if I had ordered a screw driver,
no doubt to stab myself in the eye, self harm or even, god forbid,
extract a screw.

Boat building may have ceased but life, and sailing (and gliding - more of that later) goes on.

With more (too much) time now on my hands, attention turned at last to long suffering Sally, my 82-year-old Vertue which has been putting up with my neglect for a few years now. Finally the other day, after a couple of weeks away over Christmas, she decided she had had enough, and when I fired up the little Yanmar, decided to seize her propeller shaft.

She was clearly telling me something, viz: "I want to go ashore and get some proper TLC."

Which is why as I write she is sitting on the hard at Johnson & Loftus yard in Ullapool, with 20 years of antifouling in dust around her, and another 10 years scraping to go.

The bearing has also been removed (white metal) and as luck would have it, a standard Westerly cutlass bearing should fit the housing.

The mast is out too, and I have to say it has done well despite being exposed to Highland weather for nearly ten years since it was last out. But then I did lay on about 30 coats of varnish, having primed it with a two part International clear finish.

I am in two minds whether to take the rest of the antifouling off, or just consolidate. Either way I have bought 5 litres of Strippit; a Bosch scraper and some chemical called trisodium phosphate, one of which should do the trick. It would certainly be nice to see all that pitch pine again, before covering it in underwater primer.

With so much of Sally under the water, it really does pay to have the smoothest possible hull.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8852003173593963201.post-21599938550179409482019-02-05T09:34:00.002+00:002019-02-05T09:34:49.720+00:00Last PostWhile posting yesterday I had a look, for the first time in a while, at all the comments over the years. I did not realise how many there were, and all but a few complimentary.

So to all those who posted comments, I have now read them all, and thank you for taking the time, and apologies for not replying.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8852003173593963201.post-3708211738169826652019-02-04T09:31:00.003+00:002019-02-04T12:56:14.061+00:00Farewell Viking BoatsWith the workshop now resounding to the cries of turkeys, rather than the cacophony of nails and band saws, Viking Boats is now officially defunct after over 15 years.

It was never a reliable means to make a living, but kept the wolves from the door, and its owner busy in the dark winter days when most of the 25 or so boats were built.
I can't say I miss those dawn starts, chipping ice off the chisels - well, you know what I mean. In the early years the cold never bothered me. The activity soon warmed you up, although visitors would invariably ask: "How can you work in the cold like this".

Well, no more. It is 8am on a freezing morning, and I am typing this in my pyjamas.

So, to all my clients, who have to the man and woman been totally trusting and a delight to work with, thank you. I have not had a single bad debt in all that time. Payments have often arrived before the work was done, which meant it was spent by the time it was done, leaving me almost always in arrears and in the red.

Also now on Lake Geneva, here at Beale Park

Boat building will never make you a fortune, unless you start with a fortune as some fortunately have. But among the lawyers, estate agents, accountants and office workers, building a wooden boat carries enormous cachet. You are considered amongst the lucky elite, to be working with your hands, no matter how far from reality and romance that can be on a bitter morning in January with a recalcitrant strake refusing to yield to gentle persuasion.

Owners became friends, some of whom stayed with us before, during and after taking their boat home. As far as I know none have sunk, or sprung unquenchable leaks, but I must admit that some could have been built better. There's always room for improvement, and being largely self taught, I did enjoy finding new, sometimes unconventional ways to do things, some of which worked well, others not so, leading to a reversion to the old, trusted ways.

My favourite: a faering in solid larch, with copper fastenings and oak frames

However, although old and trusted ways are often the best ways, that is not always the case, so I would urge budding boat buildiers to trust their own instincts. The old and trusted ways may simply have become ingrained habits, and after taking apart many old wooden boats, you often find old and trusted ways have in fact contributed to the deterioration you find deep inside the structure.

And if you do need a mentor, someone to keep you honest, then I can highly recommend my own, personal guru, Tom Whitfield in Australia. We have never met, and may never meet, but his encouragement has been beyond compare.

And to the late John Leather, wherever you are, when you told me that boat building would be a thankless and unrewarding business, you were not far wrong. But I urge anyone keen to try their hand, to go for it, whatever the rewards or thanks. The satisfaction of seeing a boat you built is all the thanks and reward anyone needs.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8852003173593963201.post-27325083101233232942018-04-17T16:47:00.000+01:002018-04-26T08:35:37.114+01:00Nearly ThereOctober last year was it? The last post? It must have been a long, cold winter (it was) and with snowdrifts above the windowsills at one point.

Now spring is in the air and the Arctic Tern is about to fly south to Lake Geneva where she will cut a very strange figure. What will the Genevans make of a Norwegian/Scottish, Scandinavian/Shetland type boat among all those Rivas?

And coming along nicely is a loch fishing boat for the Isle of Mull, due out on 1 May, after which I intend to take a break for a few weeks to work on Sally.

Besides which, our tenure at the Old Dairy Parlour is coming to an end in 9 months. The end of an era, indeed, after nearly 18 years in which over 20 new boats have emerged from the dusty depths, some of them quite good, I have to say.

What I will do is anyone's guess. It depends on whether I can find a place to work, and I have a few ideas. But surely there can be no better place than where I am, for which thanks are due to my wonderful landlady, sometime pig farmer, turkey breeder, sheep raiser, cattle farmer, chainsaw wielder, wall builder and crofter extraordinary, Lucy Beattie
I believe this is designer Iain Oughtred's favourite, and I can see why.

For the curious, the details are: larch keelson, laminated Vendia stems, oak keel, daggerboard, not c/b. The fit out has yet to be decided, whether to go for a traditional joggled framing or laminated frames, or even a combination of the two.

Collars and Jeckells will make the lug rig.
The third faering out of the workshop, and the first in Vendia. Nothing I can say now can add to what I said about the material in past blogs, and from now on all my boats will be built using the stuff (unless I get a commission for a solid wooden boat...!)

Thanks Iain for designing such a delightful boat and to Alec Jordan for turning out millimetre perfect planks.

The more traditional framing, by the way, comes from the Woodfish design, rather than the much simpler Elfyn. And you'll note the aft thwart has been moved forward so as to keep crew weight more central if sailing single handed. It is removable if more leg room is need for rowing.

The thwarts will rest on the frames, without fastenings, to allow them to rock a little as you row. Easier too when you want to re varnish.

Next to fit will be the rangs, the fore and aft cant frames. Not sure quite how necessary this all is in a glued structure, but it looks nice!

A lot of extra work, mind you, but one of the best bits about making a boat is the shaping of the interior framing, and in the case of a Faering, band sawing and fashioning
and planing lots of lovely bits of oak is a joy...Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8852003173593963201.post-67675305386213835432017-06-07T17:23:00.000+01:002017-06-07T17:23:10.059+01:00Turn Time SoonThe underwater (canoe body, technically) is now painted in a semi-matt white, to set off the Vendia's grain, and provide a little more protection.

The waterline sweeps up a tad at bow and stern, which should show a flash of white at the cutwater.

The keel has been deepened to around 3 1/2in amidships, and will be planed off a touch before the keel band is fitted, after which she'll be flipped for the interior framing to start next week, I hope.

Among the things I might do differently next time are to specify that the scarphs are staggered, like a solid clinker faering, ie two in the garboards fore and aft, and one each (staggered) in the other two strakes. There's no strength issue in a laminate having the scarphs more or less aligned, but it would look more authentic, albeit at the cost of having to use longer Vendia boards. It might also be nice to employ Norwegian-type scarphs, with proud lips, but that might be just trying too hard.

The first off the blocks is an Oughtred Elfyn. This one will be my third, the last two in solid timber, this one in the lovely Vendia plank from Finland.

The decision to go for a laminate over solid was simple:any three strake boat that's not kept damp will tend to move, and most boats these days live their lives on trailers and in dry sheds, or outside in the East wind, or trailed down motorways or a combination of all of the above, which is not ideal.
Besides which, Vendia is, how shall I say, absolutely, totally wonderful to work with: don't think pl*wood, think more in terms of flawless pine, but sliced in veneers and reassembled, leaving the grain and figure as it would be in solid timber.

www.vendia.fi

Having said that, due to an oversight, the planks were cut from quarter sawn Vendia, not what they call crown cut. That's a small shame, as the faering will look almost too good, without the grain and figure (and sometimes knots) that come with planks sawn through and through.

And let's not forget a plug for my favourite glue: Collano Semparoc 60. Fantastico!
The second of the boats, awaiting keel timber, is a 22ft authentic Viking boat, designed by Aidan Campbell for his Wirral-based reenactment society. This will be rather special, in that the stems have been carved from solid by my good friend and boat builder Mattis Voss, who spent five days with chainsaw and adze. Alec Jordan digitised Aidan's plans and provided full size templates which might make it easier to build, but probably not. It will be an interesting experiment in any case to see if it is possible to construct an authentic Viking boiat using modern methods. I suspect we will find that the Vikings knew better.

The third boat, also in Vendia and due for delivery next year, is a 17ft Arctic Tern, the second I will have built, the first one in solid timber again. This is a shrunken version of Iain's popular design, and at 17ft a little more manageable perhaps.
But finally, today, the owner of the Tammie Norrie, called Bay of Plenty II, came to collect his boat and whisk her off to Skye where she will replace a family boat that came to the end of its days.

There's a poignancy in seeing a cherished boat live again in the shape of a new one, freshly made in the same old way.

She'll have to endure the scrutiny of her designer, Iain Oughtred, a neighbour of the owner's on the island, where all eyes will be on her. There was some controversy surrounding her build, traditionally in larch and oak, not the customary plywood and epoxy, a method Iain has perfected over many years. Let those who see her be the judge, but as the old saying goes: there are many ways to make a good boat.

Meanwhile, here are some photos before she left for Skye.
The thwarts are fitted, and next job are the knees, breasthook and general fitting out; rowlocks, mooring rings etc and floorboards.
Oh, and lots of lovingly applied Coo-Var "Yacht & Seaplane Varnish". Doesn't that have a nice, old-fashioned ring about it? I can imagine it being applied to those wooden flying boats, their hulls all copper rivets and veneers, some of them, the P5 and N4s, for example, designed by Linton Hope and constructed along boat building lines dating back to the First World War.
Nothing much to say other than to point out the use of larch for the steamed timbers, rather than oak which I find has a tendency to go brittle and break over the years. Never found that with larch which steams well and is more predictable.
Then a man from Skye called to see if I could replicate an old boat he had on his family croft. Replicate, perhaps, but restore no, so I suggested one of Mr Oughtred's Tammie Norries, but stretched a little here and there, in a way that is only possible when you build in wood.

The moulds were spaced a wee bit further apart, and hey presto: another 6in, as if by magic.

The pile of larch outside the shed was hauled inside and chopped up into manageable bits, the backbone set up on the bench and before too long the beginnings of a boat started to appear at Viking's old milking parlour by the shores of Loch Broom.

The joy is that the owner is in no tearing rush, which means I can take my time. To date, a couple of weeks into the build and the garboards are on. I am trying a slightly different way of doing the stems. It's a hybrid between cutting a proper rabbet in a solid stem/apron, or splitting the two and working the rabbet into the outer stem, then refitting it.
The rig will now be a sprit, and will be made when the time comes. For now she will be rowing only.

The centre thwart has a removeable aft slat, the reason being that the rower can choose the most comfortable distance from the back of the thwart to the rowlock, which foir an adult is around 12in. Children will want to row with the slat in, a shorter arm's length away from the rowlock, about 8in, whereas an adult will want the full stretch, in which case the slat can be removed.

Not seen that before in a dinghy, but I have often wished for it when I have found the rowlocks just a little too near for comfort.

So, here she is.
Larch? Why not oak? Well, of all the boats I have repaired, none timbered in larch have needed timbers replacing, but many have had broken oak frames, which I guess is due to the fact that steamed oak seems to get harder and more brittle with age. The breaks usually occur at the sharpest turn of the bilge.

But I have not as yet had to replace any cracked larch timbers, although I have had to replace those worn away by fishermen's wellies. They are softer. But if protected they appear to last as long, and larch steams beautifully. In all the steaming, none broke, and I was even able to get the third from the bow to conform to the tightest of radii, without a problem.

I have been told that Canadian rock elm was like spaghetti when steamed, but you can't get it these days.

This may be a wee boat but it still has to be built in the same way as any larger and in some senses it is harder, as tolerances are tiny. I was measuring plank width differences in millimetres to make sure both sides went up evenly. The eye sees the smallest deviation from what Tom Whitfield, my mentor, called suent, an old West Country term that is hard to translate. It means sweet to the eye, and you've either got it or you haven't. It's not in the eye of the beholder either. A boat either looks right or it doesn't. It's a tricky business but very satisfying when you get it right, or so nearly so that even you can't see any faults.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8852003173593963201.post-75314254530106537492015-11-18T18:51:00.003+00:002015-11-18T18:51:37.985+00:00All Planked up (and nowhere to go...)Sheerline needs a trim, down at the mid point by 1in or so, tapering to nothing at the bow. Apart from that, she's ready for fitting out.

A coat or two of sealer first of all before timbering out. Not a lot more to say other than how much harder it is to build in solid timber than plywood. More rewarding, yes; more latitude in how you lay the planks, yes; need for steaming at bow and stern, yes. Nicer? Undoubtedly. Building this boat reminded me why I got involved in traditional boat building and why I firmly believe we should never, ever forget how to build in solid clinker, a method that is as old as the Vikings who brought it to our shores.

Harder, most certainly, but do not anyone ever tell you that a plywood clinker boat is anything other than a poor, very poor relation. Sorry, but having built a few of them both, I know which I prefer (despite the head scratching and agonising).
It's not the most efficient way to build, but I have the time to experiment to some degree and building upside down, while you can still get your head under and do the riveting up, makes sense. But then you have to move the whole lot to the strongback and set up level again.

It does mean that I was able to clean up the bottom of the boat, then do the same inside, so everything looks nice and tidy for the photos!
The moulds have since been put back in and everything levelled up ready for the fifth plank. And building right way up allows me to eyeball the lines when it comes to the crucial last four strakes.

Here's what I am seeing. Pleased, yes. Complacent? No. I can see there's a slight bump at station 2, which will need addressing before the fifth plank is fitted, something I am not sure I would have spotted when it was on the bench. See what I mean? A few strokes of the plane should sort that out before it gets out of hand.

Why is it that it's always station two that tries to get away from you. Probably because, although the width at that point is the same as the plank below, it lies more vertical, and the eye sees more of it. Why am I so honest about what can go wrong? I hope you appreciate it!

The garboards were made a tad over 9mm, as I want the centreline to be strong. The stem/apron is split, and the outer stem will be added once planking is done.

At a little over 8ft, this is not so much an Auk as an Ork (or if you are a Tolkien fan, an Orc). But not quite so ugly, I would hope.
Maybe a Slightly Bigger Auk, or a not so Little Auk, whatever, the new boat is an Auk, to all extents and purposes as drawn by Iain Oughtred and ever so slightly modified by myself, notably to soften the abrupt twist in the garboards to make it easier to get a length of 8mm larch around the forward moulds and into the stem, and touch more rocker too... Close your ears, Iain. Trust me!
Not much to show, but here's what it looked like a few days ago. Rabbet worked in, stems made and the backbone progressing. There's no hurry for this one, so I intend to stretch it out over the winter and fit in some other projects, such as the restoration of the pram the owner of the Auk first showed me. It will be a challenge, and I am not wholely convinced it is possible to restore a boat so badly damaged. Which is why he agreed to a new boat. And one I persuaded him should be a stem dinghy, for its looks, and sailing ability. This is destined for Caithness and a big loch.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8852003173593963201.post-37253203419573383182015-08-06T16:32:00.002+01:002015-08-06T16:49:01.919+01:00LAUNCH TIME (at last..) A WORLD FIRST FOR VENDIA/COLLANO CLINKERThat's it, then. In the water, quick row and all's well with Bob. In fact I would not hesitate to claim that this was among my all time favourites, along side the faerings.

So, here's the evidence. What do you reckon? Is Vendia planking, glued with Collano Semparoc, with Vendia laminated frames, riveted to the shell, not a fine way to build a clinker boat? Better than traditional larch on oak, perhaps? A modern alternative to an old method that may have had its day? Or just a better way than building in plywood and epoxy.

And as far as I am aware, this is a world first: the first Vendia/Collano clinker boat, and one of the first of Paul Gartside's elegant Bobs to be built in clinker, rather than strip plank.

How did she row? What do you reckon...!
No time to launch but we did raise the mast before strapping her to the trailer for the long haul south.

I am quite pleased with the larch sheer strake, which adds a touch of class and various small modifications to the layout.

Steve Hall made the sails, and Jeremy Freeland the spars. The long-suffering Alec Jordan kitted the boat and. incidentally, if anyone wants to build one I have the jig available for sale or hire, which would represent a considerable saving.

What can I say? A very nice boat for a very pleasant couple who will, I hope, have many pleasant hours sailing her.
